As a completely new user of e-cigarettes, there may be many things you need to keep track of. Among other things, how your new e-cigarette works and what it should contain, but also how long you can expect the e-cigarette to last before you have to buy a new one.

As a rule of thumb, the coil in your e-cigarette can last for approx. 2–4 weeks. But if the e-cigarette still tastes like the flavour you have chosen and it still works as it should, you do not need to replace it.

There are a number of tips on what you can do yourself to make your e-cigarette work a little longer, and you can read more about it here in this blog post.

What is a coil?

A coil is also called a heating element or an atomiser. The word coil is the most commonly used name, which is why it is probably also the name you will come across most often when talking about e-cigarettes.

The coil in an e-cigarette has the sole purpose of heating the e-liquid in the tank. When you switch on your e-cigarette, a metal wire inside the coil is heated. The heat causes the e-liquid to evaporate, and the vapour produced is the vapour you inhale. In short, this means that all the e-liquids you have chosen, regardless of flavour etc., will always pass through your heating element.

Naturally, this also means that the coil is the component in your e-cigarette that will wear out first. It may therefore be necessary to replace it from time to time if you want to get the most flavour possible from all the vapour produced by your e-cigarette.

How can I make my coil last longer?

The heating element in your e-cigarette has a major impact on how long you can vape with your e-cigarette. If this is the first time you are going to use your e-cigarette, and therefore also the first time the coil is going to be activated, it is important that one of the first things you do is let the coil soak up e-liquid in order to provide it with the best possible conditions.

If the coil is completely dry when you start the e-cigarette for the first time, you can easily risk it tasting burnt and the heating element being damaged because it is too dry. It is therefore always a good idea to soak the wick or cotton in your e-cigarette before you start vaping. To be completely sure that it is fully saturated after you have filled it with e-liquid, you should wait approx. 15 minutes before taking your first puff with your e-cigarette.

You can also choose to moisten the cotton manually; you must do this before installing it in the tank. If necessary, use a small pipette and drip the e-liquid directly onto the cotton. You must continue until the cotton can no longer absorb any more liquid.

Unfortunately, some e-liquids may also be too thick for your heating element. Usually, these are the sweet liquids, such as fruit flavours. Unfortunately, these can shorten its lifespan because the metal wire found inside the coil has a tendency to become caramelised.

Create the best conditions for your new e-cigarette

To create the best conditions for the cotton in your e-cigarette, you should always make sure that the tank of the e-cigarette does not become empty. If you do not have enough e-liquid in the tank, your e-cigarette will not be able to produce the necessary vapour, and the flavour will also deteriorate significantly when you vape.

If the tank runs out of e-liquid, the vapour from your e-cigarette will taste burnt and you will have to replace the coil with a completely new one.

Here are three tips on how to make your coil last as long as possible.

  1. Always make sure that your e-cigarette has enough e-liquid. If you want to get the most out of vaping, you should always make sure that the tank is completely filled with e-liquid.
  2. Choose an e-liquid with a high PG level. The e-liquid in your e-cigarette usually consists of 3–4 different things: PG, VG, nicotine and flavouring. PG has a thinner consistency than VG, and the cotton can therefore absorb the liquid faster than if it were a liquid with a high VG content. Therefore, if you choose an e-liquid with a high PG content, the risk of a burnt taste when you vape is not as great, since the coil does not become dry.
  3. Try using less flavouring in your e-liquid. You can also try an e-liquid with less flavouring, such as one of the standard e-liquids. These contain significantly less flavouring than a DIY e-liquid. Unfortunately, the flavouring can caramelise, which can reduce the coil’s performance and result in a poor and burnt taste.
  4. If your coil has become caramelised, you can also try cleaning it. You can do this with lukewarm water or pure alcohol—for example, vodka.
  5. Finally, you can also choose a tank and a battery with temperature control. By using temperature control, you can provide your coils with significantly better operating conditions. The advantage of using temperature control is that you can set the temperature for your coil yourself. This means that the coil cannot be heated above the specified degrees. If the temperature in the coil drops, the battery is automatically reactivated.

If you have chosen to quit smoking, it is also likely that you use the e-cigarette every day, and the more you use your e-cigarette, the faster the e-cigarette will also wear out. This also means that the higher the wattage you vape at, and the sweeter the e-liquids you use, the faster the coil will wear out.
